Burning Feet at Night? Causes, Warning Signs, and When to Get Checked

By Dr. Yale Gordon, DC, Housecall Chiropractic

Your feet may feel fine during the day, then start burning or tingling when you settle into bed. Some people describe heat in the soles; others feel pins and needles, sharp pain, or an odd mix of burning and numbness. If it keeps interrupting your sleep, it is worth finding out why.

Burning feet is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can have several causes, and the right next step depends on your health history and the pattern of your symptoms.

Why might my feet burn at night?

Peripheral neuropathy is one possibility. It means nerves outside the brain and spinal cord are not working as they should. People may notice burning, tingling, reduced sensation, or trouble with balance. Diabetes is a common cause, but nerve symptoms can also be associated with vitamin deficiencies, certain medications, alcohol use, kidney disease, and other health conditions.

Not every burning sensation is neuropathy. Skin problems such as athlete's foot, irritation from footwear, or a nerve compressed near the ankle can also play a role. An examination and, when appropriate, medical testing help sort out the cause. The fact that symptoms are noticeable at bedtime does not, by itself, identify which condition you have.

What details should I pay attention to?

Before your appointment, jot down a few observations:

  • Is the burning in one foot or both? Does it involve the toes, soles, or a larger area?
  • Do you also have numbness, tingling, weakness, or a change in balance?
  • When did it start, and is it spreading or getting more intense?
  • Do you have diabetes, a recent injury, or a new medication?
  • Have you noticed a wound, redness, swelling, or a change in the skin?

These details can help a clinician decide what to examine and whether you need testing or a referral.

When should I seek medical care?

Arrange a medical evaluation if the burning persists, worsens, spreads up your legs, or comes with a loss of feeling. Seek urgent medical care for sudden symptoms after a possible toxin exposure or a foot wound that appears infected, especially if you have diabetes. Sudden one-sided numbness or weakness, particularly with facial drooping or speech changes, is an emergency: call 911.

If your feet are numb, check them regularly for cuts or blisters you may not feel, and avoid using very hot water or heating pads on them.

What can an in-home visit tell me?

At Housecall Chiropractic, I begin by listening to when your symptoms started, what they feel like, and how they affect walking and sleep. I then perform an in-home evaluation of sensation and balance as appropriate and explain what the findings may mean. We can discuss whether further medical evaluation is needed and what support may fit your situation.

An in-home assessment can help document symptoms and guide the next step. It does not replace blood work, a neurologist's assessment, or other medical testing when those are indicated. There is no single treatment that is right for every case of burning feet; identifying the cause matters.
